Hiring activity increases in August, led by steep rise in temp billings

The latest @KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs survey signalled a renewed upturn in hiring activity in August as more parts of the economy reopened following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Although permanent placements rose only slightly, temp billings expanded at the quickest rate for 20 months.

Employers report that their ability to make hiring and investment decisions is now improving for the first time since February as lockdown eases. However, business confidence in the wider economy remains weak.

UK hiring hotspots revealed in new Jobs Recovery Tracker

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) has launched a new Jobs Recovery Tracker today (22 May), which uses job postings data to spot signs of labour market growth by county and occupation type. It found that there were around 950,000 unique job adverts in the UK between 11-17 May 2020, with the largest surges in hiring seen in rural areas.

Government must work with the recruitment industry to tackle long-term unemployment

ONS labour market statistics, published this morning for the period January to March 2020, show the beginning of the decline the jobs market as the lockdown took hold.
