The Fred & Anne Jarvis Award

This year’s Fred & Anne Jarvis Award has been given to campaigner Madeleine Holt.

Madeleine is the co-founder of Rescue Our Schools, a parent-led campaign group for properly funded and locally accountable state education. She has also been instrumental in the More than a Score alliance which campaigns for alternatives to SATs and includes the National Education Union.

The Fred & Anne Jarvis Award was established in 2008. It recognises the contribution of individuals, external to the Union, who have campaigned tirelessly on educational issues. The award is named after former NUT General Secretary, Fred Jarvis, and his wife, Anne Jarvis, a lifelong NUT member and former chair of the Education Committee for Barnet Council, who died in 2007. Previous winners of the award include Malala Yousafzai and Michael Rosen.

Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

“Madeleine is a richly deserving winner of the Fred & Anne Jarvis Award. She has been central to recent national campaigns, tapping into the issues that really matter to parents and teachers. As her nomination reads, she has a passion ‘for what is fair, right and just in education’, and I commend this award wholeheartedly.”
