Social Mobility Commission accountability hearing: Education Committee to question Chair Dame Martina Milburn – Tuesday 18th June at 9.30am

The Education Select Committee is to question Chair of the Social Mobility Commission (SMC) Dame Martina Milburn on the work of the Commission and its role in improving social mobility.

Dame Martina took on the position last summer following a pre-appointment hearing with the Committee. The session is likely to focus on how the SMC has changed since she became Chair and its effectiveness in working with the Government to promote social mobility.

The SMC’s most recent State of the Nation report was published in April and called on the Government to ‘take urgent action to help close the privilege gap’. In March last year, the Committee published a report in which it made several recommendations on the future of the SMC, after the resignation of the previous Chair Alan Milburn.

Dame Martina will be joined by Sammy Wright, one of 12 Social Mobility Commissioners, and Director of the SMC Sasha Morgan.

Witness schedule

Tuesday June 18th, Committee Room 18, Palace of Westminster

At 9.30am

  • Dame Martina Milburn, Chair of the Social Mobility Commission
  • Sammy Wright, Social Mobility Commissioner
  • Sasha Morgan, Director, Social Mobility Commission
